Awareness Technologies Inc has acquired Bristol-based Screen Time Labs Limited, creators of software that enables parents to manage the time their kids spend on their tablets and smartphones, for an undisclosed sum.

Commenting on the deal Screen Time’s CEO and Founder Steve Vangasse said, “We are excited to partner with Awareness Technologies. Together we hope to help parents to manage a healthy screen time balance and create a safe online experience.”

Steve came up with the idea after experiencing the usual parent-based frustrations when it came to getting his kids away from their shiny new iPads: “When Spring came round they were too glued to tablets to go and play outdoors.” He explains, “As I was a developer I fancied having a go at writing an app and developing software to manage the amount of time they spent playing MineCraft and other games.”

Currently a team of 15, they are expecting to double that in the next 12 months. Steve will remain CEO of Screen Time as the business continues to invest in its Bristol team and grow its market share.

Brad Miller, CEO of Awareness Technologies commented: “We are thrilled to join forces with Screen Time Labs. With more studies revealing the negative effects excessive screen time can have on a child’s health, parents have become more concerned about managing the amount of time their children are spending online each day. This alliance with Screen Time Labs will allow us to offer parents the ability to manage their kids’ screen time allowance from any location.”

Nathan Morgan, Director at Shaw & Co who advised Screen Time on the deal said: “Screen Time Labs is testament to the high calibre of technology businesses coming out of Bristol at the moment.

"
This deal is a great result for Steve and the team who now have the opportunity to drive further growth globally, particularly in US markets where they have already experienced phenomenal success to date. "

On his experience of working with Shaw & Co, Steve Vangasse said: “Nathan has been a massive help in the sale of my company Screen Time Labs. Throughout the whole process it was very comforting to know I had him and the Shaw & Co team fighting my corner. He was invaluable during negotiations, with a deep knowledge of the technical details and an expert ability in communicating complex issues coupled with a strong drive to move the process forward. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Shaw & Co and Nathan in particular – my only regret is that I didn’t bring them in earlier in the process.”
